Mission
The purpose of the Women’s Center is to serve the unique needs of the College’s female students, staff and community members by providing a safe physical location that offers the following: consultation/referral to counseling, support/discussion groups, workshops, gender-specific resources, networking opportunities and county referral, outreach programming, celebrations, and speakers on women’s and gender issues. Emergency financial services and the Smart Choices program are offered to CLC students only.
The Center supports special populations including single mothers, returning female students, displaced homemakers, nontraditional career seekers, victims of rape/sexual abuse and domestic violence, women in cultural transition, and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/queer individuals. While the Center focuses on services geared toward the CLC female population, its doors are open both to women and men. Several events throughout the academic year and summer session invite a diverse audience. Both women and men have been integral in the development of the Center.
A Collaborative Effort
The Women’s Center frequently will collaborate with other College departments, groups, and clubs as well as with community organizations and businesses in order to make available an extensive set of services and programs. In particular, the Center will “share” Counseling staff who have expertise in personal/crisis counseling for women, utilize advocates from local women’s organizations, and refer students to county support services.
Resource Area
Ideal for classroom use, for research and referral, the Resource Area houses gender-specific books, journals, newspaper articles, videos and compact discs. Materials are a combination of purchases through a CLC Foundation Grant and donations made by CLC community members. Materials can be checked out for two weeks at a time, and there is a fee for items returned late.

I am attempting to persuade my colleagues at Houston Community College to open a Women’s Center on par with your excellent center. How are you funded? What are some of the resources, grants, private donors, public funding, etc. that is available or that I might suggest our college pursue?
Jaye – I’m so sorry for the extremely late reply. Thanks for your inquiry. The Women’s Center is a student and community service at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, IL. We are funded mostly through the College budget, and we raise money for special programs for our clients. There are state and federal grants available for special student populations, though, as you may guess, a lot of that funding has been/is being cut due to the state of the economy in Illinois and nation-wide. There are Women’s Centers in Illinois that have taken advantage of a grant for Displaced Homemakers and the Perkins grant for Non-traditional Careers. The CLC Women’s Center has some grant support but not a lot because we have limited space for staffing needs that most big grants require. My best advice is that you get your college’s full support, so that they fund a women’s program as a permanent service. Best of luck!

Good Morning- I was surfing the web and bumped into your site! Over all, it’s is pretty nice, I, like the layout. If you get a second can you shoot me an email at bobbymc@live.com and let me know who designed it or where you found it? Thanks!
I would like to see a speed dating for women 50 and over at your facility. It is rather difficult to meet women 50-65 years old. It would also be helpful to have the event on a Friday as opposed to Thursdays when most of us are still at work.
Thank You,
Susan
Susan – Unfortunately, because we are a community college and public institution, our administration will not allow the Women’s Center to offer a dating service. I hear where you’re coming from though and have had some inquiries for networking suggestions. I know there are some progressive churches and community groups that set up social events and opportunities for “seasoned singles”. Perhaps you can check these out in your town. Sorry I can’t be of much help.
